Frequently asked questions

Can I use pictures from this website?

Images subject to the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license are marked as such and may be used under the license terms. You may, subject to attribution, reproduce and redistribute the image in any format or medium, and edit (remix, modify and build upon the image for any purpose.

Images not marked with the Creative Commons license are copyrighted and may not be reproduced or redistributed without permission.

Who can upload photos?

Photos can only be uploaded by users that are registered for the image gallery. Please contact Christian Schmid-Egger (christian@bembix.de) or Stefan Schmidt (schmidt.s@snsb.de) if you are interested to contribute images to our gallery .

Which Hymenoptera photos are of interest for the picture gallery?

We are mainly interested in photos of species that are not yet represented in our picture gallery. The gallery already contains photos of more than 800 species of Hymenoptera, including nearly all common species of our native (Central European) fauna, in particular bees and other acuelate wasps. There is therefore mainly a need for photos of non-European species, and for photos of Hymenoptera that are less often photographed, such as parasitoid wasps. It is important, that diagnostic characters are visible as clearly as possible on the photos.

Do you accept all images?

No, we only use excellent quality photos that reveal details of the insect specimen. Also, collection data are essential for scientific research purposes, and cannot accept photos that lack collecting data like date and locality.

How do I upload images to the website?

Uploading images is only possible for registered users. Using the "Submit your photo" button, one or more pictures of a specimen can be uploaded. An identification can be provided by entering a name in the upper search field. If the search does not produce a result, a name can also be suggested. The four fields "Family", "Subfamily", "Genus" and "Species" are available for this purpose. Please enter the complete species name in the species field, i.e. genus name and species epithet.

For each picture, the collection date, country and the exact site must be entered. Geographical coordinates (in decimal degrees) are optional but should be given if possible.

If you want to register, please contact us here. We will talk to you soon.
